If you’re planning a vacation for the near future, you might want to consider a vacation package instead of purchasing a la carte hotel rooms and plane tickets.  Not only are these packages usually a lot cheaper than paying for a flight, hotel room, and attraction tickets separately, you can also find exciting packages that can be customized to your specific needs.

When you’re looking for a great deal on a vacation package, there are several things you can do to find the best possible deal for your destination.  Consider the following tips when booking your next vacation:

Book your vacation in advance.

The further in advance you book your vacation, the more money you’ll save on your vacation package.  You’ll also have a better chance of securing the best hotel rooms if you book early.  In fact, many of the vacation packages offered today include a suite or similar accommodations for the same price as a regular hotel room, if you book your package far enough in advance.

Travel during the off-season.

You can find outstanding deals on vacation packages if you travel during the off-peak seasons.  Most popular tourist destinations have almost 70% of their visitors over a period of six months or so out of the year.  By traveling during the other, less popular months, you can save a ton of money on your vacation package.

Be flexible.

If you’re flexible in your travel dates or the hotel you want to stay in, you may be able to find a great deal.  Sometimes, even altering your plans by one day can save you a significant amount of money.  If the hotel you want to stay in is full, or if it’s only offering accommodations at full price, consider checking other hotels in the area.  You may find a hotel that has lowered its price to cover the overflow.

Book through a travel agent.

Many times, travel agents have the inside scoop on great vacation packages.  A travel agent can purchase these types of vacation in bulk and pass the savings on to their customers.  Not only will the package usually cost less, but you won’t have to worry about any of the details associated with planning a vacation either.

Use your travel reward points.

You can often use your frequent flyer miles to pay for a portion of the airfare or hotel in your vacation package.  There are also many travel clubs, such as AAA, that offer great deals on vacation packages.  You can find many of these travel clubs through your local travel agent, insurance company, or even through your bank.

Go with a group.

If you can find a group to travel with, you’ll be able to cash in on tremendous savings.  Group travel usually qualifies for reduced pricing on airfare and hotel rooms and attraction tickets as well – since the vendor is guaranteed to sell a specific number of tickets to your group members, they can afford to give you an extra discount.

If there’s one place I love to visit, it’s Las Vegas. Granted, I like to gamble, particularly craps, but even non-gamblers out there will find this city to be truly unmatched in the world. A lot of places in the world have gambling, but Vegas truly shines in a wide variety of areas.

First, you won’t see the massive amounts of mega hotels like you see on The Strip anywhere else. The Strip is just one mega-resort after another. Each casino hotel has its own theme, but they all have fantastic spas, huge casinos, shows, and a wide array of restaurants.

If you are from Europe, then I especially recommend Vegas. The casinos in Europe are puny compared to Vegas casinos. They generally have at most one restaurant, instead of every food under the sun like Vegas casinos have. Also, European casinos are much more boring and small than Vegas casinos. This is because in Europe, gambling tends to be government monopolies, so there is maybe one or a few casinos per city, instead of casinos being on top of another like they are in Nevada.

In short, when people think of ‘must visit’ places during their lifetimes, they generally think of New York, Paris, and maybe a natural wonder like Hawaii. I think Vegas should be added to this list. It is truly a man-made superwonder of indulgence.

When it comes to world travel, there’s a few places I believe are ‘must sees’ in one’s lifetime, such as going to Paris, New York, Las Vegas, and Hawaii. There’s a few other places that are nice to go see but I wouldn’t ever say are ‘must sees,’ such as visiting Switzerland, going to Hawaii for a second trip, or doing a general Europe trip to see places like Rome and Barcelona.

Then there are a few places I believe are highly overrated, yet travel writers often tout as amazing vacation spots. Most of these places are tropical getaways.

For example, Cancun is the most overrated place I have ever been to. It is fairly expensive, not as expensive as Hawaii but certainly not cheap, but is still fairly trashy. Unless you are an 18 year-old and are awed at the idea of drinking legally and finding a prostitute, Cancun just doesn’t have anything to offer that you can’t see at any other Mexican vacation spot. It is not nearly as nice as Hawaii. If you want to get drunk and throw up on the street, you can probably do that in your home town anyways.

Like Cancun, I believe the Cayman Islands are also pretty overrated. This place is even more expensive than Cancun and doesn’t offer much else. Grand Cayman is a very sleepy island; there simply isn’t anything to do. Yes, the weather is nice, but you can get that on any beach in California or Florida. Unless you are really into scuba diving or offshore banking, the Cayman Islands are a pass.

Finally, I think once you see one city in Spain, all of the other cities are overrated. I’ve spent well over a month in Spain during various trips, and all of the places just start to run together. Barcelona, Madrid, Seville, whatever. Once you see one, you get the point. It’s nice to spend about 4 nights or so in say Barcelona to see the Spanish culture, but after you do that, venture on over to France or Italy.

Never thought about travel insurance before. Here’s an interesting article I read about it:

When you’re preparing to go on holiday, the packing process can be a stressful business. There are clothes to sort out, sun cream and sunglasses to buy, not to mention the toys that will keep the kids occupied on the journey and at the pool.

However, it’s also essential to ensure you get the paperwork in order for when you want to go away. Most of us don’t think about taking out some level of travel insurance, even if we’re just going away for the weekend.

Accidents while on holiday do happen, but accidents abroad can be a costly business if you don’t have some holiday insurance cover before you travel.

Whether you’re going away for a weekend break, a week in the country or travelling the world, travel insurance is an essential item to ensure you’ve packed in preparation for your trip.

Policies are available for short breaks and also on a long-term basis - known as annual travel insurance - for those who are looking to travel regularly throughout the year, such as backpacking trips.

As well as taking out some travel insurance, it can also be worth going along to the Post Office and applying for a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).

A EHIC card can be useful to have as it offers a basic level of protection should you or your family have an accident abroad.

It’s worth remembering that a EHIC card will not offer cover against factors such as cancelled flights, lost luggage or expenses if you need to travel home for medical reasons. If you need medical help whilst abroad, however, an EHIC will entitle you to free or reduced medical treatment (depending on which country you’ve travelled to).

When it comes to travel insurance, it’s better to be safe than sorry, and with a range of policies out there to cover a wide variety of holiday activities - including extreme sports cover - it is worth taking out some cover in case you run into difficulties.
